What is Preventive Medicine?

Preventive Medicine Is a medical specialty focused on the health of individuals and communities with the aim of preventing diseases, prolonging life, and promoting health through organized efforts and informed choices. It encompasses measures taken to prevent the onset of illness or injury, rather than curing them.

Preventive Medicine vs. Curative Medicine

Preventive Medicine: • Focus: Aims to prevent diseases or detect them early. • Approaches: Includes vaccinations, lifestyle modifications (diet, exercise), screenings (e.g., mammograms, colonoscopies), and education on health practices. • Goal: Reduce the incidence of disease, mitigate risk factors, and maintain optimal health. • Examples: Immunization programs, smoking cessation initiatives, health education campaigns, routine health screenings.

Curative Medicine: • Focus: Aims to treat and cure existing diseases and conditions. • Approaches: Includes medications, surgeries, therapies, and other treatments to alleviate symptoms and eradicate disease. • Goal: Restore health by addressing and eliminating the cause of illness or managing its symptoms. • Examples: Antibiotics for bacterial infections, chemotherapy for cancer, surgical procedures to remove tumors.
